Hay-fever Injections

Approximately 10-15% of the population suffer from hay fever. Of those effected, around 10% will not respond to conventional, easily available hay fever treatments like anti-histamine tablets, eye drops and nasal sprays.

Hay fever is caused by your body’s immune system reacting to pollen in the environment, usually either from the trees which begin producing pollen in late winter, flowers, or grasses which can produce pollen into early autumn. The hay fever season therefore can extend to the majority of the year and it depends on what you are allergic to as to when your symptoms are worse.

The hay fever injection can relieve symptoms of hay fever for the entire season, although some people may require a second dose of the medication.

The brand name for the Hay fever injection is Kenalog. Each Kenalog injection contains the steroid medication known as Triamcinolone acetonide 40mg/1ml as the active ingredient. The steroid injection works by reducing the body’s inflammatory & allergic response.

The NHS no longer offers Kenalog injections to severe hay fever sufferers, even though it is still licensed for the treatment of severe hay fever in the UK and continues to be routinely administered to patients in most other countries around the world.

The Kenalog is injected into the buttock (gluteal) muscle. This is known as an Intra-Muscular (IM) injection. The skin surface is initially cleaned with an alcohol swab and it only takes a second to inject the medication.
